LAVORP at a Glance
- LAVORP is a faith-based, not-for-profit organization that reflects the biblical concept of shalom (peace), which is the existence of the right relationships among individuals, the community and God.
- The organization provides opportunities for face to face meetings where offenders accept responsibility for and learn the impact of their actions and make amends to their victims. Victims have an opportunity to tell of their experiences (part of healing), work towards closure, view the human side of the incident, get questions answered and have their needs met.
- LAVORP Volunteer Facilitators play a critical role in facilitating this process by guiding cooperative dialogue and focusing on accountability, responsibility, and addressing the harm in an emotionally and physically safe setting
- Under the BARJ (Balanced and Restorative Justice) concept, LAVORP works hand in hand with the Juvenile Justice system as it works towards Victim Restoration, Offender Accountability and Community Protection.
- LAVORP annually receives about 300 referrals of incidents involving over 800 victims and offenders from Juvenile Probation, Youth Aid Panels, Police and the Community At-Large.
- Agreements between victims and offenders have a 95% fulfillment rate.
- Youth working with LAVORP have a low recidivism rate of only 17%. Thus some youths are not being trained to crime and our communities are safer due to less victimization.
- LAVORP's alternative justice programs save Lancaster County taxpayers more than $150,000 annually.
- The organization recently celebrated its 11th anniversary of service to the Lancaster County communities.
- LAVORP earned a National Points of Light Award from President George Herbert Walker Bush in recognition of its long-term positive effect on youth.
“The chief problem in any community cursed with crime is not the punishment of the criminal but the keeping of the young from being trained to crime.” - W.E.B. DuBois
